Westminster

Westminster was the name given the area around Westminster Abbey (the West Minster or monastery church) that gave the area its name. It has been the seat of the English and later the British government for over a thousand years. Amazingly compact geographically, the area called Westminster is home to the most iconic of London landmarks. It is little appreciated that most of metropolitan London derives its name from the area around the Abbey. The City of Westminster constitutes most of what we colloquially call London.
