Rome, Italy

"Marcus Agrippa, son of Lucius, during his third consulate, built this" So reads the inscription on the facade of the Pantheon. The inscription is not literally true. Marcus Agrippa built the first Pantheon, which was destroyed by fire in 80 A.D. The emperor Hadrian built this replacement structure in 125 A.D. as indicated by date stamps in the bricks. He restored the original inscription, a common practice in Hadrian's rebuilding projects.
