The iconic view of Venice seen on countless travel brochures and post cards, shown here is the waterside entrance to Piazza San Marco or St. Mark's Square. The tower at left center is the campanile (bell tower) for St. Mark's Basilica, the domes of which can be seen in the center of the frame. The campanile was originally built between 1156 and 1173 and rebuilt in 1912 following its collapse in 1902. The sand-colored building to the right is the Doge's Palace. The doge was the elected head of state during the time of the Venetian Republic.
