The two parallel elevated walkways that span the bridge above the road surface gained an unwanted reputation as a hangout for prostitutes and pickpockets and were closed in 1910. The enclosed walkways were reopened in 1982 as a part of the Tower Bridge Exhibition, a museum that is housed in the bridge's two towers.
