The Lincoln Memorial was created as a result of legislation signed by President Howard Taft on Feb. 11, 1911. Construction began in 1914 and the memorial was dedicated on Memorial Day, May 30, 1922. The sculpture was designed by American sculptor Daniel Chester French. It is made of 28 blocks of white Georgian marble, stands 19 feet tall and weighs 175 tons.
