mg-KSC-63C-1417.jpg

America's first orbital missions were accomplished using a variant of the Atlas family of ICBMs as the launch vehicle. For the four Project Mercury manned orbital missions, NASA used a modified Atlas D booster designated as LV-3B. The Mercury manned orbital missions lifted off from Launch Complex 14 on what was called ICBM Row on the Air Force side of Cape Canaveral. (Photo courtesy of NASA.)
