Bald Eagles in February 2009

There have been many observers and photographers of this nest. Others may have witnessed behavior earlier or later than I, as well as things I missed entirely.

By February 1, it seemed construction was finished and decorating began. The female did a lot of wrestling with sticks, getting everything arranged properly. I observed copulation for the first time on February 2. Nest lining material of dried plant stalks and even plastic was brought to the nest in the early part of the month.

On Valentines Day, the male brought in a small stick and joined the female at the nest for quite awhile. Though I didn't witness copulation that day, they did engage in some courtship behavior, which included the touching of bills.

By February 24, the pair continued to bring in nesting material and spend lengthy periods away from the nest. Incubation is not yet taking place.

On Feb. 27, a second adult male challenged the mated male throughout the day. There were attacks, steep dives, and talon to talon conflict. The female stayed in the nest much of of the time and did not engage in the battle. There was copulation at the nest in the afternoon and for observers it was difficult to determine which male was prevailing.

On Feb. 28, there were repeated copulations at the nest in the morning, although I am not sure if the male was the original mate or the challenger. (I heard from others that there was continuing aerial combat later in the day.)
