We arrived at this bridge over the Merced River at 8:15pm, only to find that the road was closed from 8pm. We had known that the road was closed earlier in the season, but thought it was now open all the time. Wrong! The ranger told us that there was no way they could open the road again for us (in spite of a lengthening line of cars waiting) since they were working on the road every night and the heavy machinery was already deployed, blocking the road completely.

To get to our accomodation we would have to drive a couple of hours around another road. Given how many hours I'd already done that day, we just decided to leave quickly, so as to be first back to the nearest accomodation, 15 minutes behind us. Luckily we found a room there.

This photo was taken early the next morning. The section of temporary road on the other side of the bridge, is single lane only, at least for the time being.
