On the road the next morning, with time to spare before meeting Lilac in Fresno, I found myself in Walnut Grove, confronted by a drawbridge.
I'm glad I got a photo of one of these "stop sign ahead" signs, which were very popular in California. I can see some logic to the system, but it does seem to mean a great deal of otherwise unnecessary stopping and starting.
