Best sunset of the trip

Shikotsu-Toya NP, Hokkaido

20060506 222.jpg

We saw this coming, and luckily I managed to find a decent place to stop. Fields, mountain, snow, sky ...

I'm puzzled by the pattern of vertical streaks at the bottom of the picture. This one has been through a lot of post-processing, but this and all the other pictures taken at the same time show this strange pattern. It looks a bit like condensation on a window; but that seems rather unlikely. It is true that the camera was in and out of the car all day, each time with a big temperature change; but then the humidity was low so I wouldn't expect any trouble. And anyway, the camera was warmer than the outside air. It's also true that the darker parts of the shot had to be rescued from underexposure (but even then some pixels right next to the sun, as well as the sun itself, were overexposed and also needed rescue work). Hmmm.

I too thought it must be the PP. But I just now went back and had a look at the original raw files, and I found that it's visible (only on the dark parts of the shots) even on the thumbnails with no exposure compensation applied. And I can't see it on any pictures except those taken at that sunset. Peculiar.
