2006.05.26 No donkey!

Tomakomai, Hokkaido

20060504 183.jpg

We were in the "Bikkuri Donkey hamburger restaurant" (a chain, I suppose), behind
the Pachinko near our hotel in Tomakomai. I'm not sure I want to know what's in the
hamburgers, but anyway they don't come in any kind of bun, and they tasted pretty good.

This is the easy way to order without a common language: using a picture menu! (The english
descriptions of the dishes were also quite good so we didn't really need the pictures.)

We were staying in Tomakomai only because we booked the trip at the last minute,
and accomodation was hard to find. Having checked in, we then had to find somewhere
to eat. And basically the only places open were next to the Pachinko not far away.

Although it's not on the tourist circuit, we did find something we liked in Tomakomai:

Well, it wasn't all that secret. Lilac was doing all the hard work while I was trying to capture the atmosphere. An interesting thing about using the super-wide lens is that people may not realise they are in the shot. Unfortunately, objects near the edge usually look distorted so the results may not be brilliant.

The rule of thumb is that your generic photgrapher can handhold a camera at 1/F seconds exposure, where F is the equivalent focal length in mm when using a 35mm film camera. In this case that means 1/(10x1.6) seconds. I could do better here because I had my elbows on the table.

And for super-wide, most things are in focus! I have my own rule of thumb for that: "f/5 seems to be plenty small enough in most situations at 16mm equivalent focal length".

"No Donkey" means that even though it's "Bikkuri Donkey hamburger restaurant", there's no donkey on the menu, as far as I could see!
Thanks as always for your comments - I appreciate the moments spent on thinkng about my pictures.

I love the secret use of the wide angle. (Is that right?)

This looks like your basic fast-food-inna-warehouse arrangement.

I'm not sure the picture title helps with the picture.

I don't think I understand all the fancy numbers on the tech notes. f/3.5-4.5 USM 1/10s f5.0? How does that work? (I was just curious 'cause I was admiring the depth of field in low light.)
