The photos here were taken in and around the city of Iquitos, Peru, during April 2003. All photos were made with a Nikon CP4500.
Iquitos is located in the Amazon basin of northeastern Peru and is Peru's largest jungle city with ~400,000 people. Iquitos was founded during the 1750's as a Jesuit mission. A population boom occurred in the late-1800's owing to the city's importance in the rubber industry. However, the rubber industry collapsed by the end of WWII after rubber-tree seeds were smuggled to the outside world. Logging, agriculture, oil and tourism support the city now.
Iquitos is possibly the largest city in the world that is not accessible by road; access is by air or up the Amazon River.
