Tundra Swans.
Lake Mattamuskeet, North Carolina.
Grace and strength. Effortless. Powerful. If I could fly like these swans ...
I would.
Tundra swans are long distance travelers. Their summers are spent on nesting grounds north of the
arctic circle, and tagged swans have shown that they travel from as far as the Alaskan North Slope
near Prudhoe Bay. In early September they begin their migration south and east, arriving in
areas around Lake Mattamuskeet, Lake Phelps and the Chesapeake Bay by mid-November to early
December. By March, they look north again and are ready to begin their return flight home.
