One morning I walked down along the river thinking to make landscapes and images of rocks and
water. After some time making slow-speed blurred water photos from the tripod, I looked up and
saw a campesino rider approaching on horseback from the opposite bank. I expected he would cross,
and guessed he might pass directly in front of me. His horse was fitted out in fine gear and the
young man was dressed in the classic serape. As he and his horse splashed toward me, I mouthed
a "¡buenos días!", pointed to my camera, then to him, to ask permission to take his photograph.
His smile and nod signaled agreement. I framed the photo, set focus, tripped the shutter and ...
nothing happened. It took me a moment to realize that the self-timer was still activated from my
earlier work; at the same time I noticed in the viewfinder that the camera was set at f/22
resulting in a shutter speed of 1/6th second. All I could do was to pan with the rider until the
shutter finally tripped 5 seconds later, and by that time he had more than filled the frame.

Although fortuitous, I decided that I liked the resulting image. To me it has a dream-like
quality, though not entirely pleasant and reassuring. The headless horseman.
