My parents were married at the Mt. Eden Jewish Center, Aug 15, 1954.

They told me at the time it was one of the more "fashionable" synagogues in the Bronx, popular for weddings and other life cycle events. They described to me a domed ceiling with stained glass in the sanctuary... although I understand their wedding had to take place in the social hall in the lower level because of a leak in the dome (not sure if that was totally the reason or not).

In the 1990s I drove past the building after going to a Yankees game - building certainly was in a state of disrepair. No chance to save the building or the neighborhood by then. I kind of wish I had made the "pilgrimmage" sooner while there was still an opportunity to see the synagogue. I can only imagine how difficult it was to sustain the synagogue in those last years / decades, as the neighborhood declined.

In 1943, Rabbi David B. Hollander was elected rabbi of Mount Eden Jewish Center in The Bronx, New York, and remained its rabbi until the synagogue disbanded in 1980. At the time, he had forfeited months of back-pay so that the building would not be sold to a church. In 2005, the building was demolished, and in the following year, a new apartment building was constructed in its place.

I attended Cheder there from about 1944 to 1946. I was expelled from Rabbi Twersky's class and was bar mizvahed in a little shtibel on Weeks Avenue between 173rd and 174th Streets, across from P.S. 70.

In the 1950s (and probably before and after) my father, Henry Morganstern, would play the pedal organ (harmonium) for weddings. Afterward, we would go to the basement and the caterer would provide us with a lovely nosh - same as the wedding guests.
I remember that there was a young cantor Barry/ Popper who would sing the vee ma ley for the wedding.

One story my dad told me was that there was a wedding at the Mt Eden Jewish center between a Jewish woman and a gentile who had converted. The wedding started late because a committee took the potential groom into the men's bathroom to inspect and make sure he had been circumcised.

I went to this Shul in the late 60's. I loved going to the Youth Minyan for services. It was a social group also. NCSY may have lead the services.

I also attended this Synagogue. In the late 1930's the gangs from Brook Avenue (Brookies) would raid the Synagogue and beat up the Jewish youth. I lived across the street at 1665 Morris Avenue.

I went to Mount Eden Jewish Center and Hebrew school too. I remember they would give us flags and apples on simchat torah.

This building was erected about 2 years ago and was the former location of the Mount Eden Center Jewish Synagogue. The rabbi at this shul was David B. Hollander (1950-1965?) and at 13 years old I became a man (ya right? LOL), Bar Mitvahed. I also went to school here and learned to read Hebrew like many other young kids in the neighborhood. Further, the building is on the south east corner of Morris Avenue and 173rd street.
