I think I am a young-en compared to most of the comments, bu I seem to recall a Candy store right on the corner of Walton Ave that we would all meet up in the AM to walk to Wade JHS 117.

My apartment was in the white building the top floor from the fire escape all the way around the building to the Grand concourse side of the building..I remember sitting at my window watching the Cross Bronx Expressway being built..I still look up into my windows as I travel on the cross Bronx!

Red top of building is the Bronx Lebanon Hospital Center, next art deco building is 1675 Grand Concourse/Grand Boulevard and the building with the stores is 1629-31 Walton Avenue (on 174th Street). Even though the highway destroyed so many buildings and neighborhoods across The Bronx...it surely was needed to ino order to link to other major highways going to New England, Long Island and New Jersey...and beyond. Ha, stay on I95 and go to Florida.. or stay on I80 and go to California.
