KINGSTON, Ont. (Oct. 16, 2010) - The St. Lawrence College Kingston Vikings women’s rugby team blew past Royal Military College 34-12 in The Second Annual Prom Dress Rugby Fundraiser game Saturday, Oct. 16 in Kingston, Ont. The event drew over 200 spectators and raised over $2,000 for Soldier On.

The Vikings were primed from the opening kick-off, driving RMC back into their end and with steady attacks. SLC Kingston put up the first points of the game from a penalty in front of the posts, where Dana Darlington drove over for the tri and Krystin Monger converted to put SLC ahead 7-0 at the five-minute mark.

St. Lawrence applied more pressure off the restart, but RMC backs cut through the Vikings defence with a couple of second phase rucks to score in the corner at the 10-minute mark getting on the scoreboard at 7-5, after missing the convert.

Three minutes later, the Vikings stole a scrum from RMC and the backs moved the ball out quickly where Monger broke through from the 22-metre line for the tri, which she converted to put SLC up 14-5.

RMC fought back and with eight minutes left in the half and made a charging attacking run taking advantage of a Viking error. A couple of strong rucks from RMC resulted in a tri under the posts and a made convert to send the game into the half with the Vikings up 14-12.

The Vikings started off the second half with heavy pressure driving RMC deep into its end. A quick set of passes out to the backs, a clean ruck for SLC Kingston and quick hands from Monger earned her second tri of the day four minutes into the half. SLC Kingston maintained constant pressure on RMC shutting down any attack and driving them back with excellent rucking and mauling.

Emily DeSousa picked up the ball from the base of the scrum and drove in for a tri from five-meters out, to extend the Vikings lead to 24-12. Three minutes later, SLC Kingston backs created an attack and three rucks later, Meghan Payne Renaud touched down for a try, putting the score at 29-12.

With only minutes remaining, Cortney Brockman made an excellent penalty kick to touch deep in the RMC end. SLC Kingston won the line out and were driving for the line. RMC was penalized at the five-meter line, where Payne-Renaud took a quick tap, but was stopped short of the try line, but teammate Katlyn Hill ripped the ball from her and dove over for the final tri to put the game completely out of reach at 34-12.

SLC Kingston will play hosts to Humber Saturday, Oct. 23 at the North Field at 3 p.m.
