SOLID EFFORT AGAINST MOUNTAINEERS
Vikings men’s basketball put in solid effort against the talented Mohawk Mountaineers

(Oshawa, ON) Don't let the final score 87-72 deceive you, as the talented Mohawk College Mountaineers had to put in a full effort against the SLC Vikings in the 2015 OCAA Gold Medal semi-final.

Down to just seven players, after Shaqeem Downey suffered an ankle injury in game one against Durham College, the Vikings showed tones of heart throughout the entire game, keeping the score within reach.

"We played well for 30 out of 40 minutes, but we simply lacked the depth to go the full distance against Mohawk" said Vikings head coach, Barry Smith.

"They have a full bench of well experienced players. That was the difference maker tonight."

The Vikings had a great start in the first half, frustrating Mohawk at both ends of the court. The hot shooting earned the Vikings a slim 16-15 lead after the first quarter.
It was more of the same in the second quarter, with both teams trading points and the lead, with Mohawk out with a slight 45-34 lead.

Mohawk came out firing to start the second half, going on a 11-4 run just three minutes into the third quarter. After back-to-back SLC offensive turnovers, the Vikings got the ball to their big men of Brad Richards and Donald Gibson, who were determined for offensive rebounds, frustrating the 2015 OCAA men's basketball player of the year, Matt Fennel, throughout the frame.
It was an impressive display of determination by the Vikings, as they looked tired at moments during the third but came storming back with huge three point shots from Taylor Reddick, Jaz Bains and Andrew Dawkins to come back to within six points of tying the game.

SLC defense was all over Mohawk in the fourth quarter, forcing turnovers, out rebounding, and drawing charges. Only down by five, the Mountaineers would go on a five-point run to once again push their lead to ten. SLC would keep Mohawk to a ten-point differential but once Richards fouled out with 1:27 left in the game, Mohawk stayed in control and finished with the 87-72 victory.

"After the third quarter, Kevin (Smart) and I told the guys that we have to keep this game in perspective. We are only down seven to Mohawk after three quarters, a pretty impressive accomplishment for us with only seven guys" said Smith.

Andrew Dawkins finished with a team high 24 points, 6 rebounds, and 6 assists, with Jaz Bains earning SLC player of the game honors with 14 points and 10 assists. Taylor Reddick stepped in for the injured Shaqeem Downey and recorded an impressive 17 points, shooting 5/10 from the three-point line.

The loss moves the Vikings into a semifinal game for the Bronze medal against the Lambton College Lions on Sunday March 8th at 12:00pm.

The Lions almost pulled off an upset win over Humber College, but lost by just one point in overtime, in game one. In game two, Lambton sent the Georgian College Grizzlies packing in a 82-71 win
