8 STRONG GOES FOR BRONZE
SLC continues to stun the OCAA, winning 74-73 over the Lambton College Lions

(Oshawa, ON) The eight man SLC Vikings men's basketball team are off to the OCAA Bronze Medal game after winning 74-73 against the Lambton College Lions in a game that came down to the final seconds.

The Lambton Lions came into the game well rested, having only played games at 1:00pm on Friday and Saturday. The Vikings have played nothing but late games at 8:00pm on Friday and Saturday. But the Vikings were not going to let that be an excuse, as they came out firing against the Lions.

Defensively, SLC was all over the Lambton Lions contesting each shot and forcing the Lions to use all 24 seconds of the shot clock. On the other side of the court, SLC maintained their hot shooting that got them through the regular season, as Jaz Bains and Andrew Dawkins torched the Lions from the three-point line.

Up 22-16 to start the second quarter, the Lions poured on the pressure and came within three points of tying. Coach Smith would call a timeout that settled the Vikings who maintained their lead halfway throughout the quarter, getting offensive production from all five players on the floor, ending with Bains getting fouled at the buzzer, hitting both free throws, taking a 41-30 lead into halftime.

Bains and Dawkins already had stat lines that would be impressive after a full game. But at the half Dawkins had 20 points and 4 rebounds, and Bains earned 13 points 5 assists and 3 rebounds.

The strict zone defense continued to frustrated the Lions as it forced the teams to just trade points for the majority of the third quarter.

Fatigue started to set in for the Vikings, as the Lions pressured heavily in the fourth quarter resulting in them taking the lead late in the game.

With less than three minutes to play, the teams would call back-to-back timeouts giving the Vikings a timely break heading into the final stretch of the game.

Brad Richards provided a huge block on the next possession, followed by Thomas Aufleger hitting a long-range jump shot to come within three points of tying.

On the next possession, Bains would draw a foul and hit both free throws to bring SLC within one point of tying the game.

After a Lambton timeout, and with 10 seconds remaining, the Lions inbound pass would get tipped by Brad Richards with Aufleger grabbing the lose ball and was fouled in the process, sending him to the line. Aufleger was the hero hitting both shots, giving SLC a one-point lead.

Lambton had just enough time for one last play but the Vikings forced a contested shot that missed the net complety, sending the Vikings to the Bronze medal game.

"We got our work cut out for us tonight for the Bronze" said head coach Barry Smith.

"Our guys worked hard this afternoon against Lambton, and were up late with the Mohawk game last night. Hopefully there is one more rabbit in the hat for us."

For the fourth time this season, the Vikings will play the Durham College Lords. But this time the OCAA Bronze medal is on the line. SLC is 2-1 against the number one seed from the OCAA East this season, with their most recent victory coming in game one of the OCAA Championships.

The last time SLC won a OCAA medal came in the 2010-11 season, winning Bronze.
