KINGSTON - The St. Lawrence College Vikings men's basketball team has lost some close games this year, but players were determined to make sure Saturday's game against the Georgian Grizzlies wasn't one of them.

The Vikings survived a late push by Georgian to win 59-53 in front of their hometown fans on Nov. 5.

The Vikings led 30-26 at the half and 42-34 after three quarters. In the fourth, Georgian narrowed the lead to three points at one point, but the Vikings hit some important foul shots in the game's dying seconds to secure the win.

They are now 1-1 in Ontario Colleges Athletic Association regular-season play, after losing their season opener to George Brown a day before.

Coach Barry Smith said he was pleased with the team's effort, as players are buying in to his and assistant coach Kevin Smart's defensive system. With just nine players on the roster at present, the team knows it will have to win low-scoring games “

We have to be a lunch-pail team,” Smith said. “We had to work hard and do the little things.”

Smith said he was impressed with some players who came off the bench and performed well. Claudio Marques led the Vikings with 19 points, although he did not start. Sangee Martin also came off the bench and ended up playing 25 minutes.

Terence Thomas was the Vikings' second-highest scorer, with 17 points. The men's basketball team's next games are this weekend in Ottawa. The Vikings visit Algonquin College on Friday, Nov. 11 and visit La Cite the next day.
