SLC women’s volleyball defeat Centennial Colts 3-1

(Kingston, ON) It was a decisive win for the Vikings women's volleyball team against the visiting Centennial College Colts, winning 3-1 (25-15, 25-12, 18-25, 25-17).

"It was a tough finish but the girls played really well" said Vikings head coach, Socheath Keo.

"The girls played really well in the first two sets, but we got too comfortable in the third, and the game started to get too complicated on our side of the court. We were scrambling and it cost us the set. But the girls got back to our game plan in the fourth and earned the win" Keo added.

The Colts are in a similar position as the Vikings in that both teams are developing to eventually join the Ontario Colleges Athletics Association (OCAA).

The game was delayed with the Colts stuck behind an accident on the 401, but once we got underway, the Vikings didn't waste anytime building a lead, looking very confident in front of a great home crowd. SLC was able rely on their serves and ball placement to stay ahead on the scoreboard in the first set. Centennial would call a timeout with the score 22-15 for SLC, but it was of no help as the Vikings won the set 25-15.

The second set was controlled from start to finished by the Vikings, as the Colts struggled to come up with an answer for the SLC serves and blocks.

Nerves settled in for the Vikings in the third set, as the Colts took a small lead early on that appeared to rattle the Vikings. With the Colts still in control, SLC rookie Bridget Oakes, made two consecutive kills that appeared to settle the Vikings. But Centennial quickly responded with two straight points, winning the set 25-18.

With the score tied at three in the fourth set, the Colts once agan start to build a lead. Down 11-5 the Vikings would call a timeout and record three straight points, settling their nerves in the process. After loosing the serve, the Vikings recorded another three straight points to tie the set. The teams would go back to trading points but after a pair of SLC blocks, the Vikings broke the deadlock and never looked back, winning the set 25-17, and the match 3-1.

Cassie Parr finished with a team high 10 kills, and Bridget Oakes chipped in with 15 attacks.
