KINGSTON - The St. Lawrence College Vikings women's basketball team narrowly missed winning its first regular season game of the year.

The Centennial Colts came from behind to beat the Vikings 45-41 in a spirited game played at the St. Lawrence College gym on Friday, Nov. 25, as the host school celebrated the first of its 'Pink Games', as a fundraiser for the Breast Cancer Society of Canada.

Corisa Cluett, of Kingston, led the Vikings with 11 points, She also snagged a total of 20 rebounds in nearly 37 minutes of court time.

The Vikings led 12-7 after the first quarter and 27-17 at the half. But the Colts came out strong in the second half and hit some crucial shots in the final few minutes. The score was tied 41-41 with 1 minutes 29 seconds to play.

The loss drops the Vikings Ontario Colleges Athletic Association record to 0-6. The Colts improved to 2-4 in OCAA play with the win.

It was a heartbreaking loss for the Vikings, considering they led most of the game and were looking for a positive turnaround to their season, after losing their last game, to Seneca, by more than 70 points.

Despite the upsetting final result, the players were taking a glass-half-full approach after the game.

"I'd say it was one of our best games of the year - both offensively and defensively," said Guard Alyssa Rodrigues, who contributed with six points. "We had the intensity and we played as a team really well."

She said some mental mistakes cost the team a win in the end.

“We were disappointed to come so close and lose, but we are taking the positives out of it,” Rodrigues said. “There were some long faces (after the game), but that's good. It shows we care.”
