KINGSTON, Ont. (Feb. 9, 2011) – No. 5 St. Lawrence College Kingston men’s basketball team went at top-ranked Algonquin Thunder from the opening tip, but fell just short in a 66-61 in favour of Algonquin Wednesday night. The loss drops the Vikings overall record to 11-5, while Algonquin moves to 17-0.

At 13-13, the game hit its first of nine ties of the night at 14:06. After another deadlock at 19 apiece, the Thunder created a bit of breathing room with seven-straight points to go ahead 26-19, but the Vikings rattled off six of their own to come back to within one at 26-25 with 3:54 remaining in the half. SLC Kingston tied the game at 30-30 with 1:21 to go, but Algonquin hit the last three points to take a 33-30 lead into the break.

In the second frame, Terence Thomas (#30) buried a three-pointer quickly to even the score for the sixth time, which was followed by a layup by Mathieu Riendeau (#21) to put the Vikings ahead at 35-33 with 18:01 left to play. The lead would change a few more times with the Vikings unable to build anything more than a two-point cushion before earning a 39-39 score at 14:15. A 10-2 spurt by the Thunder gave Algonquin the largest lead of the game at 49-41 with 9:52 remaining in the game. The Vikings kept it close cutting the game to one at 51-50 at 6:30 behind back-to-back three-pointers by Mackenzie Simpson (#24).

The Vikings stayed with the Canadian College Athletic Association's (CCAA) top-ranked team all game long, but six turnovers in the span of five minutes by SLC Kingston helped Algonquin to another eight-point lead at 60-52 with 1:07 on the clock. The Vikings came to within four in the final minute of play when Kadeem Francis (#15) converted two free throws to put the game at 63-59 with 38 seconds remaining. Algonquin went 3-for-6 at the charity stripe to seal its 17th win in a row.

Simpson led the Vikings with 18 points, while teammates Francis and Riendeau netted 15 and 17 points, respectively. Algonquin’s top scorer was Nijuguna Waiganjo, who registered a game-high 22 points.
