KINGSTON, Ont. (February 10, 2010) – Matt Schmermund of Calahoo, Alta., scored on a penalty shot in overtime to hand the Queen’s Gaels a 2-1 loss on Wednesday night at the Kingston Memorial Centre.
Schmermund, who was awarded the penalty shot with just 17 seconds remaining in the extra frame, beat Gaels goaltender Steele De Fazio of Georgetown, Ont., after he was taken down by defenceman Ben Munroe of Kingston, Ont.
Ryerson opened the scoring in the first period on a goal by Cory Konecny of Stoney Point, Ont., as they outshot the Gaels by a margin of 13 to nine. Queen’s would tie the contest midway through the third period when Payton Liske of Welland, Ont., found the back of the net for his 19th goal of the season.
De Fazio would make 34 saves in defeat while Ryerson goalie Paul Gibson of St. Thomas, Ont., stopped 31 shots for the victory.
Despite the loss, the single point allowed Queen’s to clinch the fifth seed in the OUA East. Their first round opponent will either be the Toronto Varsity Blues or the Carleton Ravens. This season, the Gaels had a 1-2-0 record against the Varsity Blues and a 1-1-0 record against the Ravens.
The Gaels will play their final game of the regular season this Saturday night when they renew their rivalry with the Nipissing Lakers. Game time is set for 7:30 pm at the Memorial Centre.
NOTES: The win was Ryerson’s second victory over Queen’s in the last two weeks...the Gaels were 0 for 6 on the powerplay while the Rams scored on one of their four opportunities...the victory was also the Rams fourth straight.
