Late penalties cost Gaels in 3-1 loss, No.6 McGill sweeps series 2-0

KINGSTON, Ont. (February 20, 2015) - The men's hockey team saw their season come to an end as they were defeated 3-1 versus the No.6 McGill Redmen in game two of their OUA semifinal matchup Friday night at the Memorial Centre.

McGill wil now advance to the OUA East final and take on the winner of the Carleton vs UQTR series holding home ice advantage. The Gaels see their losing streak against McGill extend to 29 games with the loss.

The game seemed to pick up right where it left off in Montreal as the two goaltenders Kevin Bailie (Belleville, Ont.) and Jacob Gervais-Chouinard continued their dominant play between the pipes putting on a show.

The first frame was a scoreless affair as neither squad could find the scoresheet. Gaels goaltender Bailie collected an impressive 18 saves while McGill goaltender Gervais-Chouinard registered 10 for the period. McGill had chances from all over the ice on Bailie but he was able to contain the play and keep the game scoreless. Queen's managed a few chances of their own on an early powerplay but could not solve Gervais-Chouinard.

It did not take long for the Gaels to find the back of the net in the second period as Patrick McGillis (Calgary) tallied his first of the playoffs at the 0:48 mark. Darcy Greenaway (Wilton, Ont.) was credited with the lone assist. McGillis picked up the puck in the slot and fired a shot that Gervais-Chouinard was only able to get a piece of before it hit the back of the net. Bailie continued to shine in net as he turned aside an additional 20 shots.

Untimely penalties in the final frame cost the Gaels the series as Samuel Labrecque registered back-to-back powerplay markers in a 17 second span to give the Redmen their first lead of the night. After the first McGill goal the Gaels were immediately given a bench minor and the Redmen wasted no time capitalizing to take the lead. McGill's Max Le Sieur added the empty-netter in the final minute of play as the Redmen captured the 2-0 series victory.

Final shots for the night totalled 58 to 31 in favour of McGill. Bailie suffered the loss, finishing the game with 55 saves while Gervais Chouinard earned the 30 save victory.
