Women's Field Hockey, A successful homecoming weekend

The Queen's Field Hockey Team played in 3 home games over the Homecoming weekend, generating 5 points for the team, and confirming a spot at OUA playoffs. The first game was played against the Guelph Gryphon's on Saturday. The energy on Queen's campus fed the team, and Queen's earned a point for a tie game against the second place Gryphons team. The first two goals of the game were scored by Queen's players, lending the Gaels a 2 – 0 lead. First goal was scored by 5th year Amber Halcovitch (Apsley, ON) within the first 5 minutes of the game. Second goal was scored by 3rd year captain, Lindsay Bjornson (Surrey, BC), with a quick rebound shot off a penalty corner play. The Gael's continued their push, but Guelph managed to put 2 in the back of our net, finishing the game with a 2-2 tie.
The second game of the weekend was played against the Western Mustangs. Queen's rookie forward, Taylor Herrington (Toronto, ON) managed to put one past the Mustang's goalkeeper within the first 20 minutes of the game. Throughout the first half, the Gaels continued to generate a lot of pressure. However, in the second half, the Mustangs made a big push, testing the Gael's goalkeeper, Zenia Memon (Toronto, ON), who made some game-changing saves. Despite her stellar performance, the Mustangs managed to slip one past her off a rebound during a penalty corner. The game was a well-fought battle with a final score of 1-1.
The third game of the weekend was played against the York Lions. York came out flying, earning the first goal of the game within the first 10 minutes of play. The Gael's did not let this goal rattle them, and continued their even pressure until Amber Halcovitch (Apsley, ON) was able to put one past the Lions goaltender off of a tip on a penalty corner shot for her second goal of the weekend. Within 5 minutes of the first goal, rookie forward, Denesha Doman (Duncan, BC) patiently slipped another by the Lions goalkeeper, earning the Gael's a 2-1 lead. Directly afterwards, the Gael's made another push at the Lions net, earning themselves a stroke, which 2nd year player, Caitlin Gordon (Richmond, BC), calmly slotted in the back of the net, earning a 3-1 lead. During the second half of the game, Denesha Doman scored her second goal of the game with a lovely rebound ball, pushing the Gael's lead for a final score of 4-1.
Saturday evening was the Gael's annual Alumni & Parent Social and the team was able to spend time with family, friends, and field hockey alumni who came to the Grizzly Grill for an evening of socializing. It was a pleasure to have the field hockey community out to support the team over the weekend, and we pass along a big 'thank you' to all those who attended and passed along their support through their presence at the field, through emails, and through phone calls.
