Here is the little action-stopper (old mid '70s Honeywell 55). The black wire is just a pc cord that was cut in two, and the wires separated and twisted. The foil on the flash diverts part of the flash directly to the sensor. I saw on another website, a guy modified a Vivitar 283 for quick flash duration. I might pick one up, modify it, and try it for comparison.
