This image, titled "Symbolic Mutation" was taken by Jerry Uelsmann, who is known for his creative techniques even before photoshop was invented. He is well known for his work with negatives in the dark room. For this particular image, Uelsmann was using a film based camera, and he created an image that seemed almost surreal.
For my interpretation of the image, I payed close attention to the lighting used in the image, as well as the position of the woman's face and hand. By using natural light, a wide aperture, and tight focal zoom, I took the picture of my sister's face first. Next, I worked on taking the picture of the fist. Once both images were edited and re-sized, I used a gradient in order to blend both images onto one canvas to create the effect.
