James Michael Courtney 1760-1842

Jennings County Indiana Courthouse

This shot was taken by & borrowed from Donald G. Coatney. It shows the name of Michael Courtney, Revolutionary War Veteran, placed in the Jennings County Indiana courthouse. The name can be seen six down on the left. Michael was the father of Archibald Coatney. James Michael Courtney is also one of my maternal fifth great grandfathers. James Michael Courtney was born in Fauquier County Virginia & after the War migrated to Tennessee & then Indiana. On 28 January 1779, also in Fauquier County he married Sarah Rutherford. Together this couple would have eight children. What's interesting to me about this plaque is that two names down from Michael Courtney's name is that of John Grinstead. John is one of my own 4th great paternal uncles. Michael Courtney's 4th great granddaughter would marry & have children with John Grinstead's 3rd great nephew. Yet none of my immediate family ever lived in Indiana. The fact that these two men lived in such close proximity to one another & more than likely never met, yet their descendants met & married some eight hundred miles & one entire century later, is a real mind blower for me.
