Here's the story behind my shot for the Sounds of Music. We were on vacation for a large part of the Challenge so I barely had a chance to photograph music in the making. I only took this one shot for the Challenge. It was taken at an outdoor barbeque party in the courtyard between office buildings where I work. I snapped this one shot of the band from across the patio at the beginning of the BBQ.
The group's name on the big banner behind them was "ROCK BOTTOM BETTY". They played good tunes - rock standards from the 70's and 80's - but meagerly voiced all the lyrics. Everyone agreed their singing was pretty bad and they shouldn't have quit their day jobs, even for this one lunch gig. So there I was, wearing a big straw hat on a hot patio watching everyone else get food. The music was so so and I was at a party with 500 of my best friends, taking photos while they ate. So I put the camera away and got in line because they were serving Tri Tip.
When I looked at what I'd captured later that day I saw an opportunity to crop the shot and cut off part of their banner to change the band's name. Hence the title, "Not Tom Petty".
