This is the root system of a cottonwood tree I used to pass each day walking in my dog park. As floods washed away soil from the base of this old cottonwood, the naked roots would be exposed. Then the tree would send bark down to cover the roots. The year after I snapped this picture the whole tree toppled into the Mississippi River.
