The view from Point Sal State Beach near Santa Maria, CA. It’s about an hour drive north of Santa Barbara to the trailhead leading to this rugged point. The trail leads through cattle country and farmland near the coast where strawberries are grown in spring and vegetables all year round. The view is looking south towards Point Arguella and Point Conception. From this point on the west coast there is no landfall whatsoever to the south of here until you reach the Antarctic. The hike to Point Sal is at least 7 miles one way with 1000 feet of elevation gain in the middle and lots of up and down hiking over rolling sand dunes with short vegetation.
