Challenge 82 - The Internal Frame hosted by Dave Gaines

  • Internal Frames, also known as Frames Within Frames, is the subject of Challenge 82. To use this powerful compositional tool, create your viewpoint of the main subject through an opening formed by an arch, a window, a doorway, overhanging trees, a partial frame of objects and elements, an arbor, an overpass, a tunnel or any frames you can see. Find subjects surrounded by an arch or tree. Or find an interesting subject and then use your imagination to find the frame. Your main subject can be beyond the opening, in the middle of it or in front of the opening.

  • There must be something of greater interest in the frame, not just a sweeping uniform landscape. The main subject, that which catches the viewer’s eye must be within the internal frame, not the frame itself. The frame is secondary to the composition. A simple sunset or silhouette, for example, might be acceptable if the subjects are stronger than the frame.

  • You may know that internal frames can be created successfully with an out of focus frame in the foreground - or the background if your subject is in the foreground. And for busy frames or detailed subjects, that might be appropriate. But for this Challenge we want to build on what we learned about long DOF in Challenge 81. Both the frame and the main subject must be in focus. Olympus 4/3 format DSLRs and even more so, P&S digicams with smaller sensors, have an advantage in creating long DOF.
