Challenge 73: "Shadows" hosted by Steve Grooms

As announced in a preview, the subject of Challenge 73 is “Shadow.” That is similar to an earlier challenge (the fourth), which was on shadow and silhouette. Silhouette will not be included this time.

All photos in this challenge will need to feature shadow in some significant way. The rule I’ll be using for accepting an entry is whether shadow is such a significant part of the image that the photo would lose much of its interest without shadow. The light can be sunlight or artificial light.

After reflection (pun), I’ve decided to allow images of shadows that fall on water. They are shadows as well as being reflections, for the purposes of this Challenge, anyway, even if they can be thought of as reflections.

I am aware of four ways shadow often works well in photographic compositions, but the challenge is not limited to these three main uses of shadow. I offer these by way of example:

1) Any object lit by bright light will probably cast a shadow. That shadow by itself can be an interesting object to photograph.
2) The combination or interplay of an object and its shadow is often far more interesting than the object by itself.
3) Shadow can be a quiet element in an image that conveys mood and adds compositional complexity.
4) A subject with interesting form will often have that form defined by shadow. In this case the shadow is not “cast” anywhere but is an integral element in the look of the central object, defining contours perhaps or contributing to mood. Getting interesting shadows often requires rising early or staying up late.

The new guidelines, thanks to Andy, Lucy, and Judy, are clear about limitations regarding post-processing.

The main rules and fine print are found here as always:

Here are the exceptions/clarifications to these rules for this challenge:

Exhibition entries:
- May be taken with any camera at any time
- You may submit up to two entries
- Your photo(s) must be titled

Challenge entries
- You may submit one entry
- Your photo must be titled
- Watch the total kilobyte count. Some images 800 on the long side do have kilobyte counts over the maximum, which is 200. If the count is high, save the image at a lower resolution.
Please see all the other rules regarding size.

The Exhibition Gallery is located here:
