It really is pretty constant. At this point Sam was so knackered that, using sound judgment, he decided to turn around and wait at the gendarme lower down the route. He certainly could have made the summit, but he'd have been so tired that the downclimb would have been long and dangerous. Because there were others on the route, Sam told Bud to continue the remaining few hundred feet to the summit.
