Between August 9th and 12th 2000 we, being Glen Gersten, Sandy Lee, Bud Osterberg, and Krishna Venkatraman, attempted to climb our first fourteener.
I think that the highest point any of us had reached before this trip was the summit of Lassen Peak (10,457 ft. 3187 m.). We chose White Mountain Peak (14,247 ft. 4,342 m.) because of the relative ease of the hike, and because we couldn't get Whitney permits.
As a warm-up we attempted Mount Dana (13,053 ft. 3978 m.), but the wind was very high. Krishna made it to the summit; Glen waited at the saddle; Sandy & Bud turned back at about 12,200 ft. after Sandy nearly got blown right over.
The White Mountain Peak hike was rather uneventful. It's a long slog. Fifteen miles round-trip, all above 12,000 ft.
