Have two horned owls in my mother-in-law's back yard which has some very large trees to nest in. They have been seen grooming and acting like they are a couple. This is in Orange City Florida. They fly in and out of three threes which form a triangle area. We have seen them for over two weeks now. They do not mind being photographed and I even call to get them to face the camera. They have a hugh wing span and are magnificent in flight. They are here today as well 4/13/14.

While walking in the evening we say a large bird I thought to be a hawk swoop down and glide across a pond before climbing steeply to land in the top of a tree. When I stopped to see it better on its perch Its great horns were very obvious and it was clearly a horned owl. a beautiful sight.

Villages, Florida
Taking trash out, early morning , turned around
headed back to garage. Noticed a very large,
brown bird on the roof of garage with a rabbit.
He sat there letting me take pictures, the flash
going off . He didn't seem to mind. Took my
breath away ! Without a sound took his
breakfast and flew away !

Bob, I am sure it was an owl. In fact you shouldn' t allow kids in your yard because they are capable of taking a small child.

My 10 lb. cat is missing and she never roams. It happened before dawn on Pine Island Florida.I've heard there are coyotes on the island but have not heard or seen any. After viewing this site I wonder if an owl is the culprit,She is usually always in my backyard which is fenced.Puzzled....

We came home from a golf cart ride and found two Great Horned Owls sitting on our roof. They flew away from our home and landed in our neighbors tree. We watched them with our neighbors for about twenty minutes. We enjoyed their beauty and the sweet owl sounds.

We have two GHO chicks sitting on the ground at the base of a big Australian Pine and Mom sits above, 50 feet near the top of the tree. I walked withing ten feet of the chicks before I realized what they were.. Mom remained cool, thankfully.

This is in Buckingham, FL

November 18, 2009. We live in Cocoa, Fl. and have been hearing a pair in our neighborhood the last few days. A couple of days ago they got a rabbit. We heard the hooting and then a swooshing noise followed by the bleeting of the rabbit and flapping noise by a rather large bird. Other neighbors have reported sightings of this pair and have taken pictures.

saw 2 horned owls in North Port Florida, small pet owners beware small dogs and cats are on the menu, I heard this from a local vet who treated the suvivers and told tale of the ones that did not. Keep your cat indoors especially at night and when you walk that little dog carry a big stick, owls are not afraid of humans until they learn to know better.

We have a great horned owl on her nest with two babies in an oak tree where I work. We have been watching her leave the nest, feed the babies, call for half an hour in the evening and move from tree tops close by. We haven't seen her partner. She is awesome and the babies are getting their flight feathers in. We hope they stay in the area.

I live in Riverview and have a Large Horned owl that has moved into the oak trees in the yard! It is awesome having him around. I think that our large squirell population has somethng to do with it.

12/19/08 We have Great Horned Owls in our back yard every winter here in Venice, FL. Interestingly every morning I know one is near because a group of big crows begin cawing at it to make it go away; it just sits there on the pine branch way up hig; eventually the crows give up and then a bit later he relocates to another tree. Just amazing!

I live in beverly Hills Florida. I was driving to a local area lake and saw a great horned owl sitting in a tree next to a dirt road and the lake. It was beautiful; but was scarey. I was sitting in my van it was about 6 feet from me. we sat about 5 minutes watching it; it never moved.

One siting on the eve of our home and the other on a light pole across the street. We live in the Moss Park/ Lake Nona Area. They were talking to eack other. By the time I made it out with the camera, they left!! Have not seen them again.

I was sitting reading at a picnic table at our residential lake --- every now and then glancing up at the ducks and ducklings gliding peacefully around ...
Suddenly, I heard a swoosh and a HUGE creature flew in front of me and landed high up in a nearby tree. It was the biggest owl I have ever seen with tufted ears. It looked like flying fat cat. It sat in the tree for five minutes watching the ducks then flew off to the south. Amazing sight.

May 5, 2008 I discovered a pair at dawn this morning in a large dead tree across the street. This is a highly poplated area with lots of auto traffic and large subdivisions on either side of a narrow stretch of 'jungle' thick forest. They are wonderfully domesticated; not a bit shy and hopefully I can photograph them one morning when the Blue Jays sleep in. Unfortuneatly the Jays were out at the crack of dawn on this day.

I just saw one in a big live oak tree outside our home in Sarasota. Sure enough, a flock of crows was keeping him awake. He is very impressive!!
