I use this one a bit too much I know but it's a good study on shadows.
Notice how even though the overall exposure is 1/2 step over, the hand is creating a correctly (nearly) exposed face with a burned out hand?
Main light using softbox just above and barely to right of camera set to f8.0 with backlight at between f11 and f16 depending on light burn. Read EFIX for camera f-stop. Many images using D100's higher contrast setting but very few are edited on the computer.
