Kenneth Lipston was born and raised in Brooklyn and had a very early fascination with capturing images of his world.  At the age of ten he started his journey by buying photographic paper and exposing contact prints using sunlight.  At that time he was an avid user of a Brownie Starlet Camera.  Several years later he acquired an Edixa 35mm rangefinder camera and became a self-taught student in the many aspects of photography.  His quest continues today as his equipment evolved through many generations of 35mm single lens reflex cameras and several digital cameras.  His early “darkroom” experiment also evolved into a true (silver halide) darkroom with color, as well as black & white, film developing and print creation. Today he uses a Canon 50D digital camera and a full digital workflow producing archival piezographic prints.  He offers limited prints, made by the artist himself, using this museum approved process.

 

His imagery has also evolved but has often returned to his vision of seeing the surreal and overlooked abstract interpretations in our common surroundings.  He explores realism which is both objective and subjective.  With inflective observation of the human experience his subjects have included nature, the human form and photo-journalistic views of cloistered societies.  He endeavors to inspire those who view his work to see into the world around us.

 

Exhibitions include “Phantasm on Film”, The Korby Gallery, Cedar Grove, NJ; “Amish Life”, Soho Photo Gallery, New York City; IPOSA (International Photo Optical Show Association) international exhibitions; "Mélange", Ellenville Public Library & Museum, Ellenville, NY and various group shows.

 

His current photojournalistic project, "Orange County Roots”, was initiated in 2008 when he received an Orange Arts Grant from the County of Orange in New York.  This has resulted in ongoing exhibitions of photographs in Orange County galleries and educational institutes that depict the people, trades and crafts that have existed in Orange County over the last century and still exist today.  This project has been expanded into an “Orange County Roots Photojournalism Workshop, Website & Book" which includes workshops, a book and a website using a second County of Orange Grant in 2010.
