So, Who are the Moonrakers ? This story takes place in Wiltshire, South-West England. Smugglers would pass through Witlshire with goods illegal brought over the Channel from France (usually barrels or kegs of French Brandy). One night, when the moon was full, lightening the lush green English fields, some smugglers saw an Exciseman (tax collector) making his way toward them. To hide their goods they quickly threw the barrels of brandy into the nearby pond. When the Exciseman had gone they began to fish out the barrels with haye rakes. The man was suspicious, and came back asking what they were doing. In reply, they told him it was obvious - they were raking out the cheese they could see in the water. The exciseman laughed at them for being so stupid and mistaking the reflection of the moon for cheese, and rode off. The "Moonrakers" stopped raking for cheese, retrieved their barrels, and laughed as they continued their journey to sell the alcohol !
