Earth and Fire

Hampshire, UK

The hay from recently cut crops waiting to bailed – this is the Earth (Man's bounty from Nature and all that) portion of the title. This was taken on the top of Abbot’s Down as the sun set behind me, lighting up the straw with a deep red glow, hence the Fire part of the title.

Thanks for the kind words.
For the first ones from "guest", thanks for the constructive comments, its appreciated. I'm ashamed to say I did have my tripod with me but was set-up elswhere, I should have moved it....
Looking again with a critical eye, the sharpening is a bit brutal, I think if the DOF had been good, then this wouldn't have been so obvious.
If I get time, I might go back this evening and try again :-)

Beautiful shot! I am so glad you did not try to WB the reds from the setting sun out of the fields - brent

great colors! i really enjoy shooting away from the setting sun too. i like your composition and take on the theme as well.

two things i might have changed:

1) open up your depth of field a little. f4.5 is a little shallow for most landscapes. i see what you were trying to do, putting the wheat (?) into focus, but the out of focus trees in the background draw my eye away from the foreground. maybe try f5.6 next time? or were you just without a tripod? you could also use the trees as the focal point, and i bet you get 90% of the foreground in focus then.

2) i would use a little less sharpening. it seems to be making the very first "wave" dominate the shot. again, pulling my eye from all of the great color.
