It's interesting in that there is another illusion here. The shadow across the steps does two things, depending on which you're looking at at the time. In one case it appears as if the edge of the shadow is a corner of the staircase. From the other perspective, once you see the rest of the stairs in the deep shadow, it gives depth to the staircase, despite the essentially flat lighting on the non-shaded portion. I also like the flag. The framing puts just enough into the picture so you know exactly what's there and know that it's a windy day. It didn't need the full object to express that. Very nice.
