Rainbow Birds-Shirley
by Shirley Haden

I wish you could see these birds up close, the wings have rainbow colors where the sun catches them.

If it is not reflected colored light, I guess diffraction through the feathers makes the most sense. I will have to watch now, and see if I can also see such a wonderful sight :)

I don't know Brent. I have heard that birds feathers (if blue) are actually black, but this phenomenon might be another sort of optical illusion produced by diffraction through the feathers or something? I took 3 shots, 2 showed the rainbow glows the other had a slower shutter speed (I wasn't prepared to photograph the birds, I was doing something else when the birds flew into my frame) and on that third shot which was more to the right, the direction the birds were going, there were no rainbows. They must be red-winged black birds, that would explain why half didn't get rainbows, they were half female. ???

So where does the rainbow light come from? Reflected from ?? I like all the actions of the birds in flight - like one of those strobed pictures put up in random order.

Here's what I think, at first we thought they were red-winged blackbirds, but then I thought is was Starlings. I am back at the red-winged blackbirds again. Thanks for the kind comments too!
