The Food We Eat-Shirley
by Shirley Haden

I hope the tides are turning and we're going back to the way our grandparents cooked. I think the downfall of American food hit in the early 50s. People started liking convenience of the boxed foods and cattle men liked the profits from fattening up cows in 6 months instead of 3 years. The cattle got pumped full of growth hormones and antibiotics. You know, I saw a show that explained, the farmers get a calf, let it get to about 600 pounds and take it to stockyards and from there, they get fed nothing but some mash of corn with who knows what else (by the way, cows really prefer grass) and within 6 months the cow goes from 600 pounds to 1200 pounds, and then slaughtered. The entire thing is cruel and we as a nation are getting fat just like the cows, hummm? I'm shocked when I get honey mustard and there is no honey in it at all, only corn syrup! Read the labels; it's shocking to me. I think this last half century will be known as "The Obesity Era".

I am with you all the way Shirley, as you know I am rather on the large side too, but you showed me the correct things to eat and I am losing weight at about 1 to 2 pounds a week so I will get it off eventually.

Art, it's not easy either! It's like all my cooking habits have been pretty bad! When I even cooked, Marv is a fast food junkie and even though I was the one driving the car, I'm easily persuaded. Uggg! MickyD's is the non honey 'honey mustard' and KFC has honey for the bisquits and there is no honey in it. YIKES! That's really bad in fruit juice stuff. Now I know why C&C never give Zach juice.

Brent, I love Indian food too, it is a new flavor for me. I was more of a Mexican food lover, but Indian is really good too! If you buy the jars of sauce there are no preservatives and it's really yummy! I can't ever remember the names, but I've tried nearly all of the Tiger Tiger brand at Cubs. I use faux rice (cauliflower chopped to rice size, cook it, yum rice). Nothing wrong with having a donut, but most of us don't ever stop there. I'm a guilty one! X10!

The other day I happened to look at the label of the 'all natural' fruit juice I was drinking... and the second ingredient was high fructose corn syrup! Thinking I have to work a second jop just to afford real food.

sad isn't it Shirley? I wish I could be pointing a finger from a skinny body :) Is it funny or sad when I go to a farmer's marketwith my wife and do not find anything interesting to buy - or get to the register at the asian market and the owner says "Oh, all snack food today?". I think I am cooking when I heat a microwave bag of indian food with a pre-made frozen parata wrapper. When I go to the mall and just see fat behinds (with me sitting on mine) I think back to the Philippines and reallize something is just wrong.
