1st Place-Lost Arts - FrankM

When I graduated as an engineer, there were no pocket electronic calculators nor PCs. One had to learn to use other artefacts such as slide rules, tables etc. and of course to be able to make a technical drawing. Very soon after all this was consigned to the dustbin of history.

Well I see I struck a chord. The thing is I had forgotten how to use the slide rule (other than the usual multiplication/division) and, needless to say, the instruction book is long gone. However, thanks to modern technology (read Google) I found a copy on the Internet.

Yes I too remember using slide rules and deviders, it might have taken longer to do the calculations but at least there was no chance of the batteries going flat. I like the image and even these days kids (well anyone under 30 lol) would not know what they were used for so I think it is a very good shot for the theme

Yes, the same can be said for drafting. I had full intention of becoming a draftsman. I had 2 uncles I admired a lot and they were both draftsmen, one for Koch and one for Excel Industries. So, I took 4 years of drafting only to be totally ignorant about CAD. Well at least I'm very good at reading blue prints. HA! I really like the shot of these old tools. I'm sure in a short while they will be as interesting as the old medical devices. I think the white vignetting works very well with the sepia and the subject!

LOL - software engineering is much the same - words and thin abstractions have replaced understanding of how things actually work :-) cool picture frank - the reverse vignetting reminds me of those negatives that are fading by light on the edges.

Ah yes, I still have some of these instruments somewhere in a box in the loft. Somehow a slide rule made sense many years ago!
