Thank you for your comments and the information about this insect.
It really seemed a wasp, and it was quite big in addition. I was happy to have a "touch-on-the-screen" shutter release to take this photo to the full lenght of my arms ;o)

Yes I agree with Shirley it is a crane fly but I have never seen such a crane fly in England. A very good image

I found out the name of the fancy antenna and then searched for wasp with pectinate antenna, and found your bug!! He is a Crane Fly. I haven't read on enough to find out if it bites or stings yet. I am guessing it just scares away enemies by looking like a wasp. What fun to look for him/her.

It looks enough like a wasp that I wouldn't mess with it. I love those fancy antenea on it's head, it does appear to be dressed to kill. HA
