I'm with Shirley, I want to throw floating things in around it and see what happens!

That's very neat Chris! Like one big sink! ;o) It would be fun tossing little floating things in it. Like little leaves or feathers. Pretend they are a big ship in the Burmuda Triangle............gone!

From what I can gather, it's a natural phenomenon created by pressure of water passing through a narrow pipe running under the bridge connecting a small lake with marshes. I sat at the edge of a lake for a while, totally transfixed by the site, which was in a constant state of flux.

This is a fantastic shot of a whirlpool. I have to ask is it a man-made whirlpool for a yard pond/landscape pond? If it is I think that's a brilliant idea for a pond. My friend lives in England and they have this huge glass/acrylic? cylinder of water with a man made whirlpool in it. They are very hypnotic. Your photo is very good!
