The Schmidt's Brewery plant that wasn't a landmark after Landmark took over!- Shirley
by Shirley Haden

The 'Schmidt' brewery sign could be seen for a long distance in Saint Paul. It was especially bright and visible from long distance so locals knew they were almost home when they spied it. The residents missed the sign when Landmark Brewery took over and put up their own name. Unfortunately, the Schmidt sign was destroyed.

This place has a most interesting history. I really love it. There are miles of tunnels/caves that run under this brewery and during prohibition they used the tunnels to get the product 'out the door'. They haven't brewed any label of beer here for quite some years now. That mural on the this side of the plant is one of my favorites in the area too.

This is a great image Shirley and a "Landmark" no matter how you look at it. The mural is beautiful. Very interesting building with lots of character and an interesting history as well.

A fascinating building and history, the mural is great too.
I wonder if that is the view you had from this spot before the plant was built?

Oops, you know, I said the mural seemed to progress down the river and get more modern too but I was wrong. I blew it up and had a better look and it has late 1800s garb all the way through. That last mural arch has a guy on one of those bicycles with the huge front wheel. I guess it was the sky scrapers that made me think that.

Good one Shirley, and a funny story too. Best way to make sure people know this a landmark is a landmark is to put up a big Landmark sign. (Only it doesn't always work as intended it seems.)

Thanks Dennis, its a scene depicting the Mississippi River and in the middle arch is the Saint Paul cathedral and the 4th arch shows the city. I have no idea when it was painted but I love how the scenes progress in a date line as they go from 1 scene to the next. You can see it in the attire of the people. Pretty neat eh?

Excellent Shirley! That's what I am looking for, some history and a great catch to get the theme title in the image. Love the mural, does it represent the original scene?

Brings back memories of one of my fave songs from a speed-punk band Zeeke. The song is called Schmidt Value Pack, and it is one of their longer songs clocking in at 1:13. ---Woody
