Mt Whitney (April 2019)

This is my third attempt to ski the Mountaineers route. First time my binding broke, second time there was no snow. This time with Andrew and Paul conditions are perfect. We started late at night from the road closure (6920ft) to just hike to the trailhead for the night. Then we continued to Iceberg Lake (12,635ft) to camp. On summit day we booted up the Mountaineers gully, left the skiers at the Notch and continued to the top. The from the notch was not very good with hard snow churned up from footprints. Once the slopes opened up had had good skiing almost back to the Whitney Trail. Dies ist mein dritter Versuch, die Mountaineers-Route zu befahren. Beim ersten Mal ist meine Bindung gebrochen, beim zweiten Mal gab es keinen Schnee. Diesmal, mit Andrew und Paul, sind die Bedingungen perfekt. Wir starteten spät in der Nacht von der Straßensperre (2109m), um einfach zum Trailhead zu wandern wo wir schlafen. Dann steigen weiter zu Iceberg Lake (3850m) auf und machen Camp. Am Gipfeltag steigen wir die Mountaineers schlucht auf, lassen die Ski in der Notch und steigen weiter zum Gipfel auf. Die Abfahrt von der Notch ist nicht sehr gut, mit hartem Schnee und vielen gefrorenen Fußstapfen. Sobald das Terrain offener wird, haben wir eine gute Abfahrt fast bis zum Whitney Trail.
