Truckee area (Feb 2022)

I meet with Dave for his first try ate a backcountry skiing tour on Thursday evening along I-80 and on Friday we hike Castle Valley towards Castle Peak. We start at the freeway at 7200ft and ascend to 8800ft over about 3 miles. It is not a good tour for a beginner. The lower parts are in the trees, the upper steeper parts are hard snow. Only a short section in the middle is decent skiing. Dave is not enjoying it in his painful borrowed Skiboots. On Saturday we go towards Silver Peak. First along a long road and when the terrain gets steeper towards the upper part Dave decides not to continue. I continue alone and have a nice peak, good views of Lake Tahoe and the Palisades Tahoe ski area, and also good skiing for the first 1000ft down the E chute. On Sunday Dave does not want to go again and I ascend on a short tour to Castle Peak from the SE side to the top of the ridge at about 8800ft. This is the best skiing of the three days and soon I am on my long drive home. Ich treffe mich mit Dave zu seinem ersten Versuch einer Backcountry-Skitour am Donnerstagabend entlang I-80 und wir steigen am Freitag durch Castle Valley in Richtung Castle Peak auf. Wir starten an der Autobahn auf 2200m und steigen über etwa 5 km auf fast 2700m auf. Es ist keine gute Anfänger Tour. Der untere Teil ist in den Bäumen, die oberen, steileren Teile bestehen haben harten Schnee. Nur ein kurzer Teil in der Mitte lässt sich gut fahren. Dave genießt es nicht in seinen geliehenen schmerzenden Skischuhen. Am Samstag steigen wir in Richtung Silver Peak auf. Zuerst entlang einer langen Straße und als das Gelände zum oberen Teil steiler wird, beschließt Dave, nicht weiterzumachen. Ich mache alleine weiter und habe einen schönen Gipfel, eine gute Aussicht auf Lake Tahoe und das Skigebiet Palisades Tahoe sowie gutes Skifahren über die ersten 300m in der Ostrinne. Am Sonntag will Dave nicht noch einmal touren und ich gehe alleine auf eine kurze Tour zum Castle Peak von der südöstlichen Seite bis auf den Bergrückens auf etwa 2700m auf. Das ist das beste Skifahren der drei Tage und bald bin ich auf meiner langen Heimfahrt.
